Steps to Overcome Fear of Failure
Now that you have a better knowledge of what fear of failure is and the associated indications and symptoms, I will introduce you to a three-step formula for conquering this awful phobia. As with everything else, there is no quick fix. However, if you adhere to these three stages, you will have the highest chance of conquering your fear.
Step #1: Acceptance
Acceptance is the first step toward conquering your fear of failure. When a people senses fear of failure, they frequently attempt to combat it immediately. This is typically manifested by them attempting to convince themselves that they are not scared or fearful of failing.
However, this strategy will just serve to maintain your concentration on the fear. Thus, the most effective first step is to acknowledge that you really have a fear of failing.
This can be quite tough for many people, particularly in the sports culture. Nobody wants to acknowledge they have a problem, but I am here to tell you that fear of failure is not odd.
Many people experience it at some point in their life, and the truly heroic deed is facing and accepting the fear. By recognizing your fear, rather than attempting to tell yourself it does not exist, you place yourself in a position to overcome it.
Along with admitting your fear, this phase requires you to develop self-acceptance. Self-acceptance entails recognizing one’s own strengths and limitations and developing an awareness of one’s own talents, skills, and capacities.
Then, despite your weaknesses, which at the moment would be fear of failure, you must accept and feel content with yourself. By doing so, you reclaim control over your own thoughts and perceptions of yourself.
While others argue that you should never be comfortable with who you are, I feel that contentment with who you are now is the only way to truly grow and become the person you aspire to be.
Step #2: Find the Cause
The second stage is to identify the source of your failure phobia. This relates to the five reasons humans avoid fear. To summarize, the first is the expectation of failure-induced humiliation.

Fear of failure was exacerbated by negative self-talk and the loss of future goals. In fact, I believe success is the most important criterion for parents, coaches, and peers.
Success became a goal for me mainly to avoid disappointing others. So I was constantly anxious about what my coaches and teammates thought.
During games, I had the same thoughts, with the added anxiety of what the spectators and my parents thought. Worrying about such things prevents us from enjoying the present and focusing on the task at hand.
I couldn’t handle my fear of failure until I realized what was generating it.
Finding the core of your failure phobia may need some serious soul searching. Here’s where writing can really help. Write down all the reasons why you can’t fail.
Doing so will reveal a pattern that corresponds to one of the five causes given above. This form of self-examination may uproot feelings and make you doubt yourself.
Just stay strong and committed to the process, since the final stage will teach you the tools to eventually overcome your fear of failure.
Step #3: Implement Tools to Overcome Fear
The third and final step in overcoming your fear of failure is to use techniques that enable you to do two things: confidence in your abilities and focus only on yourself. Let’s begin with confidence in your abilities. This is a critical component of fear of failure, since a lack of confidence in your abilities, whether athletic or otherwise, will force you to constantly doubt yourself. This doubt allows fear of failure to infiltrate.
Thus, how does one acquire confidence in their abilities? To begin, one’s initial thought should be to practice the skill. However, I am not going to dwell on it because you have likely spent many hours practicing. This was, in fact, the strategy I initially used. I would over-train by hitting in the batting cage and taking ground balls for hours on end. While practice is critical, it does not address the psychological issues that contribute to fear of failure. ​
Positive Self-Talk
Positive self-talk is one of the most effective ways to build confidence in your talents. Due to the anxiety, you are dealing with, your internal conversation is likely to be extremely unpleasant. As a result, you have to do something about it. Only by repeating positive statements about yourself and your abilities can you achieve this. Using positive self-talk can help boost your self-esteem and outlook on life. Talking about these topics has a variety of established advantages, including the following:
- Enhanced self-assurance
- Reduced anxiety
- Reduced levels of stress and worry
- A healthier heart and blood vessels

The second technique you may use to boost your self-esteem and belief in your abilities is visualizing. Visualization may already be a part of your daily routine, and you may not even know it. Sadly, the fear of failure can lead to unpleasant visualizations.
When I was frightened of failing, all I could think about was myself making a mistake and feeling like I had already failed. Self-fulfilling prophecies are common in this form of imagery, and they often lead to failure.
Instead of visualizing yourself failing, what if you could instead imagine yourself succeeding? ‘ Over a three-month period, Guang Yue, an exercise physiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, discovered that persons who pictured themselves exercising boosted their muscle strength by 13.5 percent (Gill, 2017).
There are a few things you can do now that you understand the power of vision.
Step #1: Be crystal clear about what you desire.
This step requires you to determine what you desire. It could be making free throws for a basketball player or delivering a speech clearly for a speaker. Whatever skill set you intend to develop, write it down in full the way you wish it will proceed.
